I just returned from a 15 day trip to 9 national parks in an RV with our family and another family who are close friends. Our trip spanned about 5,000 miles and covered the western national parks including Badlands and Wind Cave + Mt Rushmore in South Dakota; Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado; Yellowstone and Grand Tetons in Wyoming; Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, and Arches in Utah.
With summer camps closed for our kids, this trip took shape at the beginning of June in response to the current conditions.
I resisted the whole idea of this trip at first. It seemed daunting. There was too much that was unknown. It felt safer to just stay home.
In many ways, this trip was an act of surrender.
Surrender to someone else planning and orchestrating the trip.
Surrender to being in an RV with 9 people for 11 straight days.
Surrender in the context of taking all possible safety precautions, but knowing that the virus numbers kept rising nationally.
In the end, it was surrender that opened up possibilities and experiences that I might have otherwise denied myself and my family.
Now that I’m back home I keep thinking about what else I can surrender to as an act of courage and possibility.
What are you willing to surrender to today?
