I’m thrilled to share that I’m starting a year-long coaches certification program with the Conscious Leadership Group this month. I’ve been using videos and resources from the Conscious Leadership Group with strategic planning clients for several years now with great success.

Serving as an executive coach has evolved somewhat organically from my consulting partnerships with clients. It’s happened naturally after strategic planning cycles end, and the important work of implementation takes center stage. Over the past few years, I have gained a deep appreciation for Peter Drucker’s famous statement, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” As a strategist partnering with an organization to create a strategic plan, we can work really hard to come up with a thoughtful plan. However, if the culture isn’t ready to carry out the plan, all of that strategy work will never amount to useful change.

In order to do something about this realization, I went looking for new tools about culture. After having used the CLG videos and signing up for their email list, I learned about their book: The 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership by Jim Dethmer, Diana Chapman and Kaley Warner Klemp. Starting this past spring, this single book has had a profound impact on my personal worldview as well as my consulting and executive coaching work with clients. I’ve shared the book with great enthusiasm with kindred spirits. I’m about to go even deeper to get intensive training with Jim, Diana, and a cohort of other CEOs, coaches, consultants, and HR professionals.

To share more about why I’m training as an executive coach with Conscious Leadership Group, here are 5 of my favorite Conscious Leadership Group resources (so far):

This short video (3:35) called Locating Yourself: A Key to Conscious Leadership. I’ve used this video with many clients at the outset of a strategic planning process to set the tone for our work together. This video sets the stage for all 15 commitments.

4 Ways of Leading handout. Here is a pdf of the CLG-4 Ways of Leading. Having the language to describe TO ME to BY ME to THROUGH ME is so valuable for leaders and teams. Click on the link above to see what that means.

Video on the Drama Triangle. I’ve used this video as an executive coach with leaders and their teams as a great way to get at a part of organizational culture that can be really tricky to address: drama and gossip.

This one-page handout on all 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership. Here is a summary of the CLG-15 Commitments. Check this out for a quick overview.

The Clearing Model. Having a communication challenge with a colleague (or family member)? Here is a video on how to use The Clearing Model. This accompanying handout is great too. You could start using this tomorrow if you are looking for a way to provide more effective feedback.

It’s hard to limit this list to just 5 resources, but consider these a preview of why I’m training to be an executive coach with the Conscious Leadership Group. I’ll be sharing more favorite resources in the months ahead as I learn and practice even more!

Or even better, grab a mutually convenient time for a phone call on my calendar here.

PS–For those of you who have also heard me talk or write about Energy Leadership before, I’d say that this Conscious Leadership Group content is aligned with the Energy Leadership principles in many ways. Personally, I have found the Conscious Leadership materials even more practical to implement in group settings. I still use and incorporate both frameworks.
